about

For the Talent Borrows, Genius Steals badge, I’m lifting a line from ‘Babylon Sisters’ by Steely Dan. Because once upon a time, after an elevendy trillionth crappy job interview near Hollywood, I said screw it and drove west on Sunset to the sea. The details of what transpired are contained in the lyrics.

Also this is the first time since I was 11 that I have written a whole song on physical keys. So it’s been about 33 years. I haven’t played a proper keyboard in a couple of decades, so I feel I must state that the cluster chords are wholly intentional.

lyrics

Sunset to the Sea

My friends, let me tell you a story
From the time that I lived in LA
Hard times in Hollywood
I had to get away
So I jumped in my car
And I looked to the bay

And I drove…

West on Sunset to the sea
Drove west on Sunset to the sea

My friends, it was nothing like I’d ever seen
Every red light turned green
Even made it through Beverly Glen
I was living the dream
Then I saw the ocean
And my troubles grew wings

And I drove…

West on Sunset to the sea
West on Sunset to the sea

(I know nobody believes me
But I didn’t even have to sit at the light at Doheny
I drove all the way down past Something’s Fishy
All the way to Malibu
Nothing but green, nothing but green, nothing but green lights
Until the blue…)
